How to Become a Moderator to Grow Your SaaS
What if you owned the community where your customers hang out? This is the ultimate growth hack for Reddit marketing: becoming a moderator of a relevant subreddit.
You cannot use your power to spam, but you can use it to set the rules and build a massive audience for your brand.
1. Find Abandoned Subs
Many subreddits are created and then abandoned by their creators. Look for subreddits in your niche that haven't had a new post in months or have inactive mods.
- You can use reddit.com/r/redditrequest to request to take over an unmoderated subreddit.
2. Build the Community First
Once you become a mod, do not pitch your product. Focus on reviving the sub.
- Post high-quality content daily.
- Ask questions to spark discussion.
- Clean up the spam.
- Once the community is active, you become the trusted authority.
3. The Gentle Sticky
As a mod, you can "sticky" (pin) a post to the top of the subreddit.
- Do not sticky an ad. Sticky a high-value resource or a guide (the 90:10 rule).
- At the bottom of that sticky post, you can have a small, permanent link to your tool. Since it's the top post in the sub, it will get consistent traffic for months.
Play the long game.
